Reading Together

Read Joshua 6:1 through 8:35

There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua did not read to the whole assembly of Israel, including the women and children, and the aliens who lived among them (Joshua 8:35).

Joshua chose an honorable way to celebrate entering the Promised Land. He made sure no words God had spoken through Moses would be forgotten. The declarations set the tone, remembering what mattered most to the Lord.

In these days, reading together is a rare occurrence. The rapid rush toward another experience leaves little time for reading and repetition. But life doesn’t need to remain that way.

By choosing to pause, a person can sit still and read God’s Word. By choosing healthy priorities, families can listen as biblical narratives are voiced aloud. By choosing to honor Scripture, congregations can stand and listen—refusing to rush toward the next movie clip and humorous story.

Reading Scripture lets God speak His Word to His people.

Thought for Today: The great lessons of Scripture can give us hope for today.

Obedience Is Best

Read Numbers 20:1 through 24:25

King Balak caught one glimpse of the Israelite multitude and knew he had to do something. He got in touch with Balaam and asked him to put a curse on this threat before they destroyed him and his people. Balak carefully explained to Balaam what he wanted, and offered a substantial bribe. Balaam seemed to have a bit of a struggle but eventually he stuck to his convictions and blessed, rather than cursed the Israelites.

Even if Balak gave me his palace filled with silver and gold, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the LORD—and I must say only what the LORD says (Numbers 24:13).

Balaam obeyed God for a time, but his loyalty waivered. Jesus was always completely loyal to His Father, doing only His Father’s will (John 14:31). As we grow into His image, may we be more and more committed to live at this level of obedience.

Prayer for Today: Father, I will do and say only what You tell me to say and do. Obedience to You is far more important than any approval or other reward this world could offer.

Someone to Lead

Read Numbers 25:1 through 27:23

No group can succeed without adequate leadership. For their escape from Egyptian bondage, the Lord provided the Israelites with guidance through Moses. Because he disobeyed God at Meribah, God prohibited Moses from personally leading the Israelites into the Promised Land. Understanding the demands of leadership, Moses prayed for his successor.

“May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all mankind, appoint a man over this community to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the LORD’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd” (Numbers 27:16,17).

All along, Joshua was being prepared to take the place of Moses as Israel’s leader. The Spirit of God rested upon both Moses and Joshua for the tasks assigned to them.

Local churches inevitably experience changes in leadership. Often, patience is needed during times of adjustment. But God’s people can be confident that God will provide the leadership needed to accomplish the mission of the Church.

Thought for Today: God provides leadership to the Church.
